Abstract

Agustin, Meri. 2024. Students’ Experiences of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) Implementation at Ekonomi Pembangunan Study Program Universitas Jambi. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Jambi in Academic Year 2023/2024. The first supervisor is Failasofah, S.S., M.Pd., Ph.D. The second supervisor is Melati, S.Pd., M.CC. English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) is defined as teaching academic courses (other than English itself) in countries or jurisdictions where English is not the predominant language (L1) of the majority of people. The implementation of EMI by lecturers in the classroom challenges students to have good language proficiency so they can understand the explanations by lecturers easily. However, students have varying levels of language skills and other factors that can cause some challenges. Because of that, this research was conducted to explore students’ experiences and challenges regarding the implementation of EMI by lecturers at Ekonomi Pembangunan Study Program Universitas Jambi. The qualitative research with a phenomenology approach was the research design that was used in this research. the researcher conducted the interviews with the participants of this research with the questions arranged using Brisk's (2008) theory about the criteria of good instruction. The research findings indicated that students had several positive experiences with lecturers' use of EMI such as respectful instruction by lecturers. The next is engaging, challenging, and supportive instruction by lecturers. The next is the use special strategies by lecturers. The last is the students’ active roles in the classroom. However, students also faced some challenges related to the implementation of EMI by lecturers, such as a lack of academic terms or vocabulary. The next is the lecturers’ insufficient language proficiency. The third challenge is frequent code-switching by lecturers. The next challenge is students' lack of preparation. And the last is students' lack of confidence. In conclusion, students witness beneficial experiences during EMI implementation. At the same time, some challenges need to be addressed.
