Abstract

This study investigated the use of digital media in teaching speaking SMAN 1 Bungo: teachers’ perspective. The researcher used qualitative design along with a case study approach. Four English teachers of SMAN 1 Bungo were participated in the present study. The researcher used in-depth interviews to collect the data based on three categories; the kinds of digital media used by teachers in teaching speaking, the impact of digital media on students' speaking aspect, and the advantages and disadvantages of using digital media. The research found that digital media used by teachers in teaching speaking at SMAN 1 Bungo were YouTube, TikTok, and digital posters. The finding showed most teachers give a positive perspective on the impact of digital media on students' speaking aspect, help repair students' pronunciation, help enhance students' fluency, help increase students' vocabulary, and repair students’ grammar. The research findings also revealed the advantages and disadvantages of using digital media such as YouTube, TikTok, and Digital posters in teaching speaking from teachers’ perspectives. The advantages attract students' interest and motivation, digital media make the teachers easier to deliver lessons, as well as make students are more active, happy, and build confidence. Meanwhile, the disadvantages were a bit time-consuming, internet connection problems, and students were more confident appearing to speak in front of the camera than in real life.
