Abstract

This research was qualitative with case study approach. The purpose of this qualitative research was to identify the students’ problems at reading narrative text in Junior High School N 1 Batanghari. The participants of this research were four females and eight males. This research focused on the students’ problems at reading narrative text in Junior High School N 1 Batanghari. Data for this research were collected through a demographic questionnaire, observation and in-depth interviews with the students. The demographic questionnaire were analyzed descriptively. The observation was to observe the students in class. The interviews data were analyzed using within-case and cross-case displays and analyses where within case is the way in analysing individual data from the participant and cross case is the way in cross checking all of individual data from the participants to get the common thing. Related to research question, there were four major themes and thirteen sub-themes found that: the students’ opinion about studying, how students’ reading narrative text, students’ problem in reading narrative text and when students read the narrative text. The sub-themes were difficulty or simplicity, enjoying or not, opinion of reading narrative text, knows or not about narrative text, understand or not, quickly or slowly, aloud or silent, reread the text more than one, vocabulary, grammar, meaning of the sentences, find any difficult words, and understand what sentences mean. The result of this research were the student’s positive has problems in reading narrative text such as reading narrative text is difficult, the students’ didn’t understand narrative text, when reading they difficult in vocabulary, difficult to understand the meaning of the sentences, the students’ always find the difficult words and didn’t understand what sentences mean.
