Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the challenges faced by students in the Advanced for Listening course and describe the listening comprehension strategies used by students in the advanced listening course at one of the universities in Jambi. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method, with a case study approach. The data collection was done through semi-structured interviews. Eight participants were selected as participants using the purposive sampling method. The listening challenges faced by almost all participants from the results of this research are failing to concentrate, unclear pronunciation, unfamiliar words, strange accents and pronunciation, noise, speed of delivery, and inability to repeat something. So that the difference in the results between the participants with the highest scores and the lowest scores related to listening challenges is students with the highest scores experience challenges with accents and poor quality tapes or disks, while students with the lowest scores face unfamiliar words, length of spoken text, nervousness, speed of delivery, and noise. Furthermore, related to listening comprehension strategies used by participants based on the results of research that has been done, the listening strategies used by participants from the most to the least are cognitive, socio-affective, and metacognitive. Participants who had the highest scores used more metacognitive strategies while participants with the lowest scores used more cognitive strategies. Of the three types that have subthemes; Planning, monitoring, resources, cooperation, asking for clarification, and self-encouragement are strategies used by all participants both students with the highest scores and those with the lowest scores.
