Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the language aspects as foundation to master English skill which should be learnt, because vocabulary is important in Speaking, Writting, Listening, and Reading. The purpose ot thia quantitative research with survey approach is to know students' strategies and dominant strategies in learning vocabulary in English study program at Jambi University. The data were collected through close ended questionnaire. 103 students English study program in Jambi University participated as the sample and population of this research. With 35 statements tehy were Metacognitive strategies, Social strategies, Determination strategies, Memory strategies, Cognitive strategies, Metacognitive Regulation strategies, and Translation strategies as the strategies in learning vocabulary. The result of this research showed that Metacognitive strategies were the highest and dominant strategy mostly used by the students to increase their vocabulary and the lowest strategy used by the students was Translation stratrgies.
