Abstract

This research highlights the importance of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in improving the quality of education, with a focus on grade I elementary school. HOTS includes critical, logical, reflective, metacognitive and creative thinking skills, which are considered essential in higher level education. Teachers are considered the key to success in realizing a quality learning process, from planning to evaluation. The research results show that students' abilities in solving HOTS-based questions have variations. The cognitive domain at the applying level (C3) is assessed as low, while the cognitive domain at the analyzing level (C4) and evaluating level (C5) is assessed as moderate. However, the Indonesian Language Lesson Content questions for class I are considered to be in accordance with the HOTS criteria. This research uses a quantitative approach with a case study type of research. These findings provide an in-depth look at the challenges and potential in implementing HOTS at the primary level. Implementing deeper learning strategies and developing teacher capabilities can be key steps to improve student learning outcomes in the HOTS domain.
