Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know whether there is any significant correlation or not between Emotional Intelligence and Speaking for Academic Purpose score of English Education Study Program Jambi University. The sample of this study is 81 students taken from R001, R002 and R004 of third semester of English Education Study Program Jambi University. The method used in this study was a correlative design with descriptive quantitative approach. In collecting the data, the documentation of students’ Speaking for Academic Purpose score and the test of Emotional Intelligence are used. The scores of Speaking for Academic Purpose were collected from the English Education Study Program archives. Besides, in assessing students’ Emotional Intelligence, this study conducted questionnaire to the students. The result of this study shows that there is a weak correlation with the mean of whole score of Pearson Correlation is .284 that correlated between students’ Emotional Intelligence and Speaking for Academic Purpose score based on the level of relationship between two variables. The finding of the result from analyze the data shows that most of elements of Emotional Intelligence have positive correlation with Speaking for Academic Purpose Score, it means that the Null Hypothesis (Hο) of this research is rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (H+1) of this research is accepted. In conclusion, there is a positive correlation Emotional Intelligence and Students’ Speaking for Academic Purpose score.
