Abstract

The purposes of this research were to investigate students’ autonomy level and their perception toward their autonomy based on their self-assessment in the learning process of Reading for General Purposes (RGP) course. The method and design used in this research were mixed methods explanatory sequential design. To gather the data, the questionnaire and interview were conducted. This research adapted Williamson’s (2007) SRSSDL questionnaire. There were 28 first semester students of English Education Program in Jambi University participated. All 28 completed the questionnaire and the interviews were conducted from purposive sample of six students from different level of autonomy, then the data were transcribed and analyzed. This data lead to the following results: (1) the questionnaire data or the result of the students self-assessment revealed that the students were divided into merely two levels, high and moderate level of autonomy, precisely, 10 students were in high level and 18 students were in moderate level. (2) from the interview data, the researcher found that the students did perceive themselves as being more autonomous since they were in the higher education environment.
