Abstract

Recent developments in machine learning and large language models (LLMs) have led to more advanced and sophisticated innovative technologies in various domains. Within the artificial intelligence (AI) domain, generative AI has changed how students learn, and educators instruct, providing new economic options for education providers and paving the way for technology-based adaptive learning systems (Kabudi et al., 2021; Al Adwan et al., 2023). From the standpoint of language educational theories, generative AI can provide learners with exposure to grammatically correct structures and diverse sentence patterns, potentially stimulating their language acquisition devices (LADs) and facilitating acquisition. Since educational compatibility is one of the features of language learning, could it affect attitude and intention of using generative AI? This research extended the technology acceptance model (TAM) of David (1989) with educational compatibility. The hypothesized model was examined using a cross-sectional survey of 377 students from an Indonesian higher education institution in Sumatra. The results revealed that: a) educational compatibility, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness were the antecedent factors that affected acceptance of generative AI-based English language learning; b) educational compatibility, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness had a significant positive effect on attitude; and c) Perceived usefulness and attitude had a significantly positive effect on continuance of intention to use. This empirical evidence and findings could provide future directions for studies on students’ generative AI technology acceptance and continuance.
