Abstract

Keywords: Challenge, Need, EFL Teacher, Merdeka Curriculum This study examines the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in English language teaching at SMPN 16 Kota Jambi, with a focus on the challenges faced by EFL teachers and their specific needs during the process. Previous research has highlighted that teachers often have a limited understanding of the procedures for implementing the Merdeka Curriculum, which creates challenges in its application, particularly in teaching English at the junior high school level. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a case study design, collecting data through interviews with two English teachers. The findings indicate that although the Merdeka Curriculum has been introduced in English teaching, its implementation is hindered by significant challenges, including inactive student participation during the learning process, difficulties in adapting to the new curriculum design, and a lack of resources. Additionally, the study identifies the needs of EFL teachers in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum, such as workshops and training, peer support, and adequate school facilities. This study provides valuable insights into these challenges and offers a foundation for addressing them to enhance the effectiveness of the curriculum in English language instruction.
