Abstract

This research aims to develop a prototype of supplementary reading materials for sixth-grade students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah An-Nizham in Jambi, utilizing the Successive Approximation Model (SAM) as the development framework. The primary objective was to create engaging and effective English reading materials that can support teachers and enhance students' interest and motivation in learning English. A comprehensive needs analysis revealed that sixth-grade students have varying levels of English proficiency. Students expressed preferences for textbooks with 1) visually appealing colors and illustrations, 2) simple and comprehensible language, 3) interactive activities and games, 4) skill-appropriate exercises, and 5) compelling stories. The developed product is a print and PDF resource comprising six chapters aligning with sixth-grade students' first-semester basic competencies. Expert evaluations demonstrated high-quality outcomes, with material experts rating the materials at 95.83% and media experts providing a perfect 100% assessment. The research contributes to English education by presenting a structured approach to developing reading materials that are pedagogically sound and tailored to young learners' needs. By addressing the specific requirements of students and adhering to educational standards, this study offers a valuable resource for improving English language learning experiences.
