Abstract
Kholija. 2024. An Analysis of Figurative Language Used in The Script of the Netflix Series “Wednesday”. Thesis English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Jambi in Academic Year 2023/2024. The first supervisor is Dr. Hustarna, S.Pd., M.A. The second supervisor is Duti Volya, S.Pd., M.Pd. This research analyzes the use of figurative language in the Netflix series Wednesday, focusing on Wednesday Addams’ dialogue. The study aimed to identify the types of figurative language used and interpret their meanings. The series was chosen for its unique narrative style, blending mystery, fantasy, and drama, which provides a rich context for linguistic analysis. A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through documentation and observation of Wednesday’s dialogue in the first episode. The findings revealed eight types of figurative language: Hyperbole, Irony, Metaphor, Metonymy, Personification, Simile, Understatement, and Allegory. Hyperbole was the most frequently used (31 occurrences), followed by Irony and Metaphor (30 occurrences each). The results show that Hyperbole emphasizes intensity in Wednesday’s dialogue, while Irony and Metaphor reflect her emotional depth and complexity. Other types, though less frequent, enrich the linguistic diversity of the series. This study enhances the understanding of figurative language in the script, particularly its role in character development and narrative expression, aligning with Perrine's (1969) theory on the function of figurative language. Key words: figurative language, Netflix, Wednesday series
