Abstract

International teaching practicum (ITP) is beneficial for future teachers’ growth to meet the market demand for quality teachers in this 21st-century era. However, despite the benefits, it is reported that pre-service teachers (PSTs) experienced several challenges during ITP. This qualitative descriptive study explores Indonesian pre-service English teachers' (PSETs’) ITP challenges and the strategies they applied to overcome the challenges, specifically during the “teaching in classroom” stage of SEA-Teacher Project batch 9 2023 in one junior high school in the Philippines. Data gathered through interviews and documents indicated 8 different challenges experienced by PSETs and 11 strategies they applied to overcome the challenges. Through thematic analysis, the findings were categorized into 4 themes (challenges during pre-active phase, challenges during interactive phase, strategies during pre-active phase, and strategies during interactive phase). This study suggests government and teacher education institutions to provide PSTs with proper preparation and upgrade their English language teaching curriculum so that the future teachers can be introduced to subjects or topics on multiculturalism in the context of English language teaching and be more prepared for teaching in the globalized era.
