Abstract

Arvan, Muhammad. (2017). The students’ ability in comprehending English descriptive text of the eighth grade students at SMPN 28 Tanjung Jabung Timur. A thesis. English Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Jambi. First Suvervisor: Susanah, S.Pd., M.Sc, and second supervisor: Duty Volya, S.Pd., M.Pd. Key terms: ability, reading comprehension, descriptive text. This research was conducted to know the students’ ability of the eighth grade students at SMPN 28 Tanjung Jabung Timur in comprehending English descriptive text. This research employed a descriptive research. The subject of the research were 42 students of the eighth grade students at SMPN 28 Tanjung Jabung Timur. Reading comprehension test was used as the instrument of this research. The test was used to obtain the data about the students’ ability in comprehending English descriptive text. In general, the finding shows that majority of the students had “low ability” in comprehending English descriptive text. It was proved by the finding that 66.67% of the students had “low ability” in the test. In specific, the finding shows that the students’ ability in identifying topic and social function of English descriptive text was good. It was proved by the finding that 47.62% of the students had “good ability” in this point. The students’ ability in identifying detail and factual information of English descriptive text was low. It was proved by the finding that 50% of the students had “low ability” in this point. The students’ ability in checking reference words of English descriptive text was “very low”. It was proved by the finding that 38.10% of the students had “very low ability” in this point. The students’ ability in checking vocabulary items of English descriptive text was low. It was proved by the finding that 35.71% of the students had “low ability” in this point.
