Abstract

The condition of the forest on the island of Sumatra shows a decline in forest quality from year to year, where the forest functions as a habitat for animals in it, one of which is the endemic animal from the island of Sumatra, the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus). Efforts to prevent this from happening are by means of captivity, breeding, and re-release. One form of ex-situ conservation area in Jambi province managed by the Jambi BKSDA is the Elephant Conservation Information Center (PIKG) in Tebo Regency. Based on the Regulation of the Director General of Forest Conservation and Nature Protection number P.9 / IV-SET / 2011 article 1 paragraph 2, it states that animal welfare is the survival of animals that needs to be considered by managers so that animals live healthily, have enough food, can express behavior normally. The minimum standards for animal welfare principles contained in Article 6, paragraph 3, include (1) free from hunger and thirst, (2) free from environmental discomfort, (3) free from pain, injury, and disease, (4) free from fear and stress, and (5) free to express natural behavior. The purpose of this research was to determine the level of welfare of Sumatran elephants at PIKG in Tebo Regency. suitability of management of the welfare level of Sumatran elephants at the Elephant Conservation Information Center (PIKG) in Tebo Regency.This study was conducted in May-June 2024 in Muaro Sekalo Village, Sumay District, Tebo Regency, Jambi Province. The data collection method in this study was through field observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies.The sampling method in this study used the scoring method. Furthermore, the data analysis method in this study uses qualitative descriptive analysis techniques by calculating the scoring for each animal welfare assessment indicator and analyzing it descriptively. The results of this study are that the management of Sumatran elephants at PIKG Tebo includes aspects of feed management, cage management, health management, reproduction management, and measurement of environmental factors such as temperature and humidity in elephant cages. It has been going well. For health management, reproduction management and environmental factors at PIKG Tebo are quite good and will be further improved in the future, so that the level of elephant welfare at PIKG can be achieved. The level of welfare of Sumatran elephants at PIKG Tebo obtained a score with an assessment result of 69.9-70.7 with a classification that is relatively good. Kondisi hutan di pulau Sumatera menunjukkan adanya penurunan kualitas hutan dari tahun ke tahun, yang dimana hutan memiliki fungsi sebagai habitat satwa di dalamnya, yaitu salah satunya satwa endemik dari pulau Sumatera adalah gajah sumatera (Elephas maximus sumatranus). Upaya untuk mencegah hal tersebut tidak terjadi adalah dengan cara penangkaran, pengembangbiakan dan pelepasiaran kembali. Salah satu bentuk kawasan konservasi ex-situ di provinsi Jambi yang dikelola oleh BKSDA Jambi yaitu Pusat Informasi Konservasi Gajah (PIKG) di Kabupaten Tebo. Berdasarkan Peraturan Direktur Jenderal Konservasi Hutan dan Perlindungan Alam nomor P.9/IV-SET/2011 pasal 1 ayat 2, menyebutkan bahwa kesejahteraan satwa adalah keberlangsungan hidup satwa yang perlu diperhatikan oleh pengelola agar satwa hidup sehat, cukup pakan, dapat mengekspresikan perilaku secara normal,. Adapun standar minimum prinsip kesejahteraan satwa yang terdapat pada pasal 6 ayat 3 antara lain (1) Bebas dari rasa lapar dan haus, (2) Bebas dari ketidaknyamanan lingkungan, (3) Bebas dari rasa sakit, luka, dan penyakit, (4) Bebas dari rasa takut dan tertekan, (5) Bebas untuk mengekspresikan perilaku alami. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui tingkat kesejahteraan gajah sumatera di PIKG di Kabupaten Tebo. kesesuaian pengelolaan tingkat kesejahteraan gajah sumatera di Pusat Informasi Konservasi Gajah (PIKG) di Kabupaten Tebo. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Mei-Juni 2024 di Desa Muaro Sekalo, Kec. Sumay, Kab. Tebo, Provinsi Jambi. Metode pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah dengan observasi lapangan, wawancara, dokumentasi dan studi literatur. Metode pengambilan sampel pada penelitian ini menggunakan metode skoring. Selanjutnya metode analisis data pada penelitian ini menggunakan teknik analisis deskriptif kualitatif dengan menghitung skoring pada tiap indikator penilaian kesejahteraan satwa dan dianalisis secara deskriptif Adapun hasil dari penelitian ini adalah Pengelolaan gajah sumatera di PIKG Tebo meliputi aspek pengelolaan pakan, pengelolaan kandang, pengeloaan kesehatan, pengeloaan reproduksi dan pengukuran faktor lingkungan seperti suhu dan kelembaban pada kandang gajah. sudah berjalan baik. Untuk pengelolaan kesehatan, pengeloaan reproduksi dan faktor lingkungan di PIKG Tebo sudah cukup baik dan untuk kedapnnya lebih ditingkatkan, sehingga tingkat kesejahteraan gajah di PIKG dapat tercapai. Tingkat kesejahteraan gajah sumatera di PIKG Tebo memperoleh nilai dengan hasil penilaian 69,9-70,7 dengan klasifikasnya tergolong baik.
