ABSTRACT NS, Kristianus. (2019). An Analysis of Translating Cultural Terms In Novel ”Child of All Nations By Pramoedya Ananta Toer” .Thesis, English Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University. First supervisor: Hidayati, S.Pd., M.Pd and second supervisor: Indri Anastasia, S.S., M.A., M.Ed. Keywords: Cultural Terms, Translation Shift This study investigated the categories of cultural terms in the novel Anak Semua Bnagsa were translated into Child of All Nations, the techniques applied in translating those terms, and its translation shift. The research questions in this study are: (1) What are cultural terms contained in novel Child of All Nations by Pramoedya Ananta Toer? (2) How does translator translate the cultural terms in Novel Child of All Nations By Pramoedya Ananta Toer? (3) What are translation shifts in cultural terms contained In Novel Child of All Nations By Pramoedya Ananta Toer? This study was a descriptive-qualitative research. The result of the study showed from the total of 72 cultural terms, 8 of them belong to the category of ecology, 26 terms belong to the category of material culture, 12 terms belong to the category of social culture, 25 terms belong to the category of social organization, and 1 terms belong to the category of gesture and habit. Meanwhile, the techniques of translating the terms, among the seventeen techniques proposed by Newmark (1988), eleven of them were used by the translator. Those are transference, couplet, functional equivalent, literal, deletion, componential analysis, through translation, triplet, cultural equivalent, naturlisation, and glossary The result of translation shift just occured in category shift. Those are structure shift, unit shift and intra system.
