Abstract

Ahmad Ridha, M.A. and the second supervisor is Yanto, S.Pd., M.Ed. Headline hold important task in a news because it is seen firstly by the reader and determine them to continue read the news or not. However, headline has their writting styles like omission some syntactic components that would make the readers difficult to undertand. Thus, this research is aimed at find out the omission of syntactic components in The Jakarta Post headline. In constructing this research, the data were collected from print edition of The Jakarta Post newspaper during 30 days from 17th until 24th June 2017 and continue from 29th June until 26th July 2017. The research only took headline on the first page of each newspaper as the data. Descriptive qualitative method was chosen as the research because the data are presented in form of description. Tree diagram proposed by Marianne Celce - Murcia and Diane Larsen - Freeman (1999) was used to analyse the word structure of headline. The research found that there are six kinds of omission in the headline that is determiner, conjunction, passive tense, copula be, phrasal modal, and progressive tense. The most omissions of syntactic component occurred in predicate with total 30 headlines and 12 headlines occurred in subject. The omission occurs frequently under phrase category NP that is omission syntactic category determiner with 10 headlines and conjunction with 8 headlines. Under phrase structure Aux, there is omission syntactic category passive tense with 9 headlines, phrasal modal with 4 headlines and progressive tense with 2 headline. Under phrase category Aux+VP only copula+be are omitted with 6 headlines. Key words : Omission, Syntactic Components, Headline.
