Abstract

EMI is implemented to enhance students’ proficiency in English. Meanwhile, EMI poses some challenges especially for non-native speakers. If only English is used during the class, the students may misinterpret the teachers’ instructions. This research aimed to figure out the challenges and strategies using English as a medium of Instructions (EMI) insight from EFL students’ experiences of English education study program in practice teaching English at the Sea Teacher Program Batch-9 in Philippines with the different proficiency of English. The data are collected using interview supported with an interview protocol. The participants of the interview were two participants who have participated in the Sea Teacher Program Batch-9 in Philippines 2023. The design of this research using qualitative approach with descriptive method in order to describe the data analysed. The findings reveal that two kinds of challenges that faced by EFL students when teaching using EMI: English proficiency challenges and emotionally challenges. Thus, it can provide an overview to other researchers with a similar study of challenges and strategies using English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI).
