Abstract

ABSTRACT Jaya, Indra (2019). English listening strategies used by Students of English of Study Program in Jambi University. Thesis, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University in Academic Year 2018/2019. First supervisor: Hustarna, S.Pd., MA. and second supervisor Masbirotni, S.Pd., M.Sc.Ed. Keyword: Listening, Listening Strategies, Listening Comprehension The study aimed to describe listening strategies and finding the dominant strategies in listening used by students of English Department at Jambi University. The participants were students who are taking and passed in listening subject in Listening for Academic Purposes of English Department at Jambi University. The total population was 64 participants from second-semester students. This study used a quantitative design with a survey approach. The researcher used SPSS to find out the validity and reliability. There were three listening strategies: metacognitive, cognitive, and socio-affective strategy. The result indicated most students used some strategies in learning listening. Moreover, in some situation most students need well preparation before listening, they also have to focus and try not to anxious during listening, and after listening they prefer to evaluate what they have finished in doing listening. The implication of this study was the students may get the appropriate strategies in learning listening and for the teachers, it can be substance knowledge to know about what usually students did in learning listening and also find out the way to teach the appropriate the strategies to make them get the comprehension in listening.
