Abstract

ABSTRACT Ikhfa, Reka. 2019. “A Teacher’s Directive Speech Acts in English Classroom Interactions at SMAN 8 Batanghari”. A Thesis, Language and Arts Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University. The first Supervisor is Dr. Dra. Rachmawati, M.Pd and the second Supervisor is Susanah, S.Pd, M.Sc The purposes of this research were to describe how the teacher direct the students in classroom interactions and to identify the types of directive speech acts used by English teacher in English classroom interactions at SMAN 8 Batanghari. The method and design used in this research was descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was an English teacher at SMAN 8 Batanghari. The data of this research are all utterances spoken by English teacher containing directive speech acts. The finding shows when directing the students in English classroom interactions the teacher used all types of directive speech acts; i.e. command or order, request, suggestion, invitation, warning or prohibition. Directive speech acts uttered by the teacher in English classroom interactions were not all spoken in English. She mixed between English and Bahasa Indonesia when directing the students during classroom observations at SMAN 8 Batanghari. Directive utterances make a good interaction between the teacher and the students. Key words: Pragmatics, Directive Speech Acts, Classroom Interaction.
