Abstract
ABSTRACT This study explores the diverse experiences of international students studying at regional universities in Jambi, Indonesia. As Indonesian higher education institutions increase their global outreach, understanding the challenges and adaptations of international students becomes essential. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews with students from various countries, including Yemen, Pakistan, and Egypt. The findings highlight a range of cultural and academic adjustment experiences shaped by differences in language, social norms, and institutional support. While some students initially felt comfortable due to shared religious backgrounds, deeper engagement with local culture revealed unexpected differences that led to culture shock and adaptation difficulties. Others faced practical challenges such as language barriers in academic and everyday situations. The study underscores that international student experiences are not uniform, but influenced by personal expectations, cultural background, and social context. These insights point to the need for more inclusive, responsive support systems within Indonesian universities to foster successful integration and learning outcomes.
