Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the types of presupposition used in the movie Barbie (2023) directed by Greta Gerwig. The analysis focuses on six types of presupposition based on Yule’s (1996) theoretical framework. A descriptive qualitative method was employed using a pragmatic discourse approach. A total of 27 selected utterances from 67 presuppositional expressions were analyzed in depth based on the conversational context of the movie. Data were collected through documentation and textual analysis, involving repeated viewings of the movie and close examination of its official transcript. The findings reveal that all six types of presupposition are present in the dialogue, with existential presupposition being the most dominant, often triggered by definite noun phrases and possessive pronouns. These findings indicate that presupposition plays a vital role in conveying implicit meaning, shaping character interactions, and enhancing the narrative message. Understanding the types of presupposition used contributes to pragmatic studies in film discourse and enriches our insight into language strategies in audiovisual media.
