Abstract

Lasturah, 2025. Exploring the Cause And Coping Strategies of Reading Aloud Anxiety at One Islamic Junior High School in Merangin. Thesis. Master’s Degree in English Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Jambi. Advisors: Dr. Mukhlas Abrar, S.S, M.HUM and Dr. Reli Handayani, S.S, M.Pd Keywords: reading aloud anxiety, internal and external factors, coping strategies. This research explores the factors influencing students’ anxiety in reading aloud and the strategies they use to manage it, focusing on eighth-grade students at one Islamic junior high school in Merangin. Horwitz et al 1986 (In Al-saraj T 2011) Foreign Language Anxiety Theory, the study categorizes sources of anxiety into internal and external factors. Internal factors include fear of making mistakes, shyness, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation, while external factors involve embarrassment, limited vocabulary, grammatical concerns, peer influence, and lack of preparation. The study used a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through interviews with 4 selected students on April 28, 2025. The findings reveal that most students experience anxiety during reading aloud due to fear of being judged or making errors in front of peers. Students employed various coping strategies, such as preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking, and, in some cases, resignation. Preparation and peer support were the most effective strategies in reducing anxiety. This study provides insights for teachers to create supportive learning environments and highlights the importance
