Aisyah, Devina. 2025. The Challenges and Strategies of Students in Developing English Speaking Skills Through British Parliamentary Debate Club Participation at Jambi University. Thesis. The second supervisor is Hidayati, S.Pd., M.Pd. Key words: British Parliamentary Debate, Speaking Skills, Speaking Problem, Qualitative Research, Debate Club, Jambi University. This qualitative research aimed to identify the challenges encountered by students and the strategies they employed in developing their speaking skills through participation in the British Parliamentary Debate (BP) club at Jambi University. The study involved three active debate club members with a minimum of one year’s experience. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that participants faced multiple speaking challenges, including difficulties with fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. However, these challenges were addressed through several effective strategies such as intensive practice, peer and coach feedback, self-reflection, and active engagement in debate activities. The participants reported significant improvements in their confidence, critical thinking, and ability to organize and deliver coherent arguments in English. This study provides insight into how sustained participation in BP debate clubs can foster not only the enhancement of speaking skills but also the development of critical academic competencies. The participants’ experiences highlight the importance of continuous practice and constructive feedback as key factors in overcoming speaking difficulties. The research suggests that incorporating debate activities into the language learning curriculum can effectively support students’ oral proficiency and overall communicative competence.
