Abstract

Many studies have explored student experiences during exchange programs, particularly the Pertukaran Mahasiswa Merdeka (PMM), one of the most prominent initiatives under Indonesia’s Emancipated Learning – Emacipated Campus or known as Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy. However, little research has investigated students’ experiences after completing such programs. While the experiences during programs and benefits of programs are well documented, the post-program challenges faced by students upon returning to their home university remain underexplored. This study explores the lived returning experiences of students, focusing on academic challenges and their overcoming strategies. A qualitative research with a phenomenological approach was employed to gain a deeper understanding of students’ lived experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten English Education students from Universitas Jambi (batch 2021) who participated in PMM Batch 3. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The findings reveal five major categories of academic challenges: Emotional Challenges, Adjustment and Reintegration, Social Integration, Administrative Barrier, and Study Progression. To overcome these challenges, participants employed a variety of strategies involving Personal Resilience, Peer-based Support, and Institutional Support.
