The reading interest of students in Indonesia, especially EFL students at Jambi University, is generally low. However, the researcher found that there are some EFL students at Jambi University who have a high interest in reading scientific papers. the purpose of this study is to describe the factors for these EFL students having a high interest in reading scientific papers. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the interview method to examine the factors. the participants of this study were 4 EFL students who have a high interest in reading scientific papers. The results showed that there are several internal factors and external factors that influence the high reading interest of EFL students towards scientific papers. Internal factors include motivation and purpose of reading scientific papers, emotion or feeling when reading scientific papers, reading comprehension and instructional approach, and vocabulary acquisition. From the four internal factors, it is explained that EFL students have an interest in reading based on their motivation, without coercion or based on something. In addition, some external factors also play a role in influencing EFL students' interest in reading scientific papers, including the influence of family and peer environment, teaching methods used by lecturers, and the rapid development of technology.
