Abstract

Tropical climate with high temperature and humidity supports the growth of Malassezia furfur fungus, a lipophilic fungal species that lives in hair follicles and skin keratin, causing dandruff. This condition is also triggered by excess skin oil secretion that accelerates the development of M. furfur. The use of antifungal drugs and skincare products can prevent dandruff from forming, but continuous use of chemical antifungals can cause unwanted side effects. The grigit fungus (Schizophyllum commune) contains bioactive compounds that have the potential to inhibit the growth of fungi. The use of grigit mushroom extract in hair tonic can provide a safer natural solution to overcome dandruff. This study aims to determine the antifungal activity and the best concentration of grigit mushroom extract (S.commune) hair tonic on the growth of M. furfur. This study was conducted in the Biology Education Laboratory and the Faculty of Animal Husbandry Laboratory, Jambi University. The method used in this study, namely the experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) design consisting of 6 treatments, namely positive control (P0), negative control (P1), and concentrations of 10% (P2), 30% (P3), 50% (P4), and 70% (P5). The parameters observed were the diameter of the inhibition zone, organoleptic test, viscosity test, pH test, and irritation test. Data obtained from the observation of the inhibition zone and pH measurements were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), while viscosity test data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test at a 95% confidence level. Meanwhile, organoleptic test data and skin irritation tests were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that hair tonic extract of grigit mushrooms (S.commune) had antifungal activity against the growth of M. furfur. Based on the statistical analysis of ANOVA [F(2,20) = 22.64,P = <0.001]. The results of the DNMRT test showed that the largest inhibition zone diameter was the 70% concentration treatment (P5), which was 33.96 mm which was significantly different from other treatments. Based on the evaluation test of the preparation, each treatment had variations in organoleptic characteristics, pH values that were in accordance with the scalp and did not cause irritation, and viscosity that was safe for application to the skin. The conclusion in this study is that there is antifungal activity of hair tonic extract of grigit mushrooms against the growth of M. furfur fungi, with the best concentration of 50%.
