Abstract

This study explores undergraduate students’ attitudes toward impromptu English speech, an approach emphasizing spontaneous speech with minimal preparation. Conducted at Jambi University, the study involved 84 students from the English Education Program using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. Quantitative data were gathered through a 30-item Likert-scale questionnaire, while qualitative data were obtained via interviews with 9 selected participants. Findings revealed that students generally had positive cognitive, affective, and behavioral attitudes toward impromptu speech, citing its benefits for fluency, confidence, and real-time thinking. However, challenges such as anxiety, limited vocabulary, and topic unfamiliarity were noted. Qualitative data supported these findings, highlighting emotional and organizational struggles during impromptu performances. The study suggests integrating scaffolded impromptu speaking activities into curricula to build learners’ spontaneous speaking skills while addressing their personal and linguistic challenges.
