Abstract
This research applies Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) based on Huckin’s (1997) framework to examine the speech delivered by Rishi Sunak, Then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, regarding the Israel–Palestine conflict on October 10, 2023. The study aims to explore how language is used to reflect and support ideologies and power relations. By analyzing the speech through textual strategies such as genre, framing, presupposition, foregrounding, discursive difference, and seven word-level features (topicalization, agency, deletion, insinuation, connotation, register, and modality), this research reveals how language in political discourse is rarely neutral. The findings show that Sunak’s speech is structured to emphasize moral clarity, emotional unity, and a strong political stance, often using language strategies that foreground support for Israel while omitting or minimizing opposing narratives. Through this analysis, the speech is shown to serve not only as an informative act but as a tool for shaping public opinion and reinforcing political alliances. The results align with previous studies on political discourse that highlight how linguistic choices work to protect dominant ideologies and suppress alternative views. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the ideological role of language in political speech and supports the use of CDA as a valuable tool in revealing power dynamics hidden in discourse.
