Abstract

This study investigates the perspectives of PPG Prajabatan alumni on the implementation of contextual learning during their professional teacher training in Indonesia. Contextual learning, which emphasizes the connection between academic content and real-life experiences, aligns with the goals of the Kurikulum Merdeka that promotes student-centered and experiential education. While its theoretical benefits are well established, the practical application of contextual learning in pre-service teacher education remains underexplored. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through structured interviews with three graduates of the PPG Prajabatan program who had applied contextual learning in their teaching practice. Thematic analysis focused on two key areas: participants’ conceptual understanding of contextual learning and the challenges faced in its implementation. The findings indicate that participants possessed a strong grasp of the core principles of contextual learning—relating, experiencing, applying, cooperating, and transferring. They perceived it as effective in enhancing student engagement, motivation, and critical thinking, and as being closely aligned with the vision of Kurikulum Merdeka. However, challenges such as time constraints, limited contextual resources, and difficulties in aligning content with students’ backgrounds were commonly reported. In response, participants employed adaptive strategies including extended learning tasks, use of multimedia, and diagnostic assessments. This study concludes that while contextual learning holds strong potential in teacher education, its successful implementation depends on institutional support, adequate training, and access to relevant materials.
