Abstract

In the digital age, podcast have become a popular self-learning medium among students. Based on the phenomenon at one of universities in Jambi, when the students listening podcast in class, they are not too free to learn listening through podcast because of limited access to themselves. However, their actual experiences in using podcasts as self-learning medium for listening skills remain underexplored. This study aims to explore the benefits and challenges experienced by English Education students, at one of the universities in Jambi, in using Podcast as self-learning for listening skills. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data in this study was collected through semi-structured interviews with five students of English Education batch of 2023 & 2024 selected through purposive sampling. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The results showed that students obtained various benefits, which included increased listening comprehension, understanding of accents, understanding pronunciation and speaking-speed, understanding context, and enriching vocabulary. In addition, podcasts also provide freedom of podcast selection, increase learning motivation and building students’ confidence in interaction. On the other hand, the study also highlighted challenges faced by students, including difficulties in understanding accents, pronunciation, speed-speech, internet connection, unengaging podcast content and other technical challenges. The use of podcasts as self-learning media provides significant benefits for students for learning listening outside the classroom. Although, students faced challenges, students are able to overcome them through independent strategies, so podcasts remain as an effective and flexible self-learning medium for listening learning. This research is expected to contribute to the development of innovative English learning methods in accordance with utilization of current technology.
