Abstract

Sihombing, Rumayanti. 2025, Exploring Code Switching Practices in Teaching English Speaking Skills at One Junior High School in Muaro Jambi. Thesis. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Jambi in Academic Year, 2024/2025. First advisor is Robi Soma, S.Pd., M.Pd. and the second advisor is Dr. Noprival, S.Pd., M.A.TESL. Keywords: Strategy, Code Switching, Speaking Skill. This study aims to explore the practice of using code switching carried out by teachers when teaching at the junior high school level, this study was conducted using qualitative methods, data were collected through three methods, namely observation, interviews with three teachers who teach English, and using a survey based on a Likert scale with 60 students to explore students' perspectives on the use of code switching when learning. the findings of this study indicate that the use of code switching is very helpful for students to understand the material well, meaning that teachers deliberately use this strategy to explain material that is difficult for students to understand, and not only that, this strategy also functions to create a comfortable environment, and make students feel engaged with the lesson and make students more interactive. This study suggests that teachers continue to use this strategy in a targeted manner and use this strategy with balance learning so students remain exposed to the targeted language being usual with target language.
