Abstract

Shanjeni, Gladis. 2025. An Analysis on the Use of Code Switching by International Students at the Faculty of Teacher and Training Universitas Jambi. Thesis, English Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University in Academic Year 2024/2025. First Supervisor: Failasofah, S.S., M.Pd., Ph.D.Second Supervisor: Dr. Rely Handayani, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Multilingual, Code-switching, and International Students This research aimed to investigate the types and functions of code-switching used by international students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Jambi. This study employed a qualitative research design using observation and interview as data collection techniques. The participants of the research were seven international students from Thailand, Malaysia, and Myanmar, selected based on their enrollment in the 2021 Universitas Jambi International Scholarship Program. The results showed that code-switching practices were common among participants in classroom communication. The types of code-switching identified were intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag switching, with intra-sentential switching being the most frequently used. Based on the analysis, the functions of code-switching performed by the participants included adapting to topic or context, compensating for lack of vocabulary, expressing solidarity or group identity, and clarifying or emphasizing meaning. These findings reflect that code-switching serves as a significant role and necessary communication tool for international students navigating a multilingual academic environment.
