Abstract
Mangrove forests are among the forests with the highest carbon storage in the tropics. As the largest carbon sink, forests play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. One forest ecosystem that influences carbon absorption is mangrove forests. This ecosystem is the most carbon-rich ecosystem in the tropics, with a potential carbon reserve of 1,023 Mg carbon/ha. One of the nature reserves in Jambi Province, the East Coast Mangrove Forest Area, has been designated as a conservation area with a nature reserve function. As one of the countries with the largest mangrove ecosystems in the world, Indonesia faces numerous challenges in managing mangrove ecosystems, particularly small island mangrove ecosystems (SMPs). These challenges include the impact of human activities that exploit the surrounding mangrove ecosystem, as well as the impacts of external sources such as harvesting and maintenance. Furthermore, other threats such as natural disasters such as storms, hurricanes, tidal waves, and tsunamis also impact the existence of mangrove ecosystems. The impacts of the various factors described above can lead to the degradation of resources within the mangrove ecosystem, necessitating increased attention and awareness of its importance. The purpose of this study was to determine aboveground carbon stocks in mangrove vegetation using Sentinel-2A imagery in the East Coast Mangrove Forest Reserve, Nipah Panjang Resort. The research method: This study was conducted in the East Coast Mangrove Forest Reserve, Nipah Panjang Resort. Data collection methods included observation, documentation, and literature review. The data sources and types were primary and secondary data. The sampling method used was non-destructive sampling. Furthermore, the data analysis method involved estimating the actual biomass content in the field based on allometric equations selected according to forest characteristics. The biomass storage from the imagery was analyzed using NDVI values and land cover analysis in 2025. The results of this study are as follows: (1) The use of Sentinel-2A imagery is effective in estimating mangrove carbon stocks using a vegetation index (NDVI)-based approach. The spatial and spectral resolution of this imagery allows for accurate identification of land cover and vegetation conditions. (2) The NDVI values obtained ranged from -0.25 - 0.7, which indicates that the mangrove area is in a fairly good to very good vegetative condition, depending on the location and vegetation density. (3) The estimated aboveground carbon stocks showed a varied distribution throughout the research area, with total carbon stocks reaching 238.377,47 tons with an average of 140,22 tons/ha with an area of 1,750 ha.
