Abstract

LATAR BELAKANG Mahasiswa afirmasi Papua yang mengikuti Program Afirmasi Pendidikan Tinggi (ADik) dihadapkan pada proses adaptasi sosial saat menempuh pendidikan di luar daerah asal. Bertujuan untuk memahami pengalaman adaptasi sosial mahasiswa afirmasi Papua yang menempuh pendidikan tinggi di Universitas Jambi. TUJUAN Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami dan menggambarkan pengalaman adaptasi sosial mahasiswa afirmasi Papua di Universitas Jambi. METODE Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode fenomenologi. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara mendalam dan observasi. Analisis data menggunakan teknik Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). HASIL Mahasiswa afirmasi Papua mengalami berbagai pengalaman adaptasi sosial, termasuk pengalaman diskriminasi, menghormati budaya setempat, kemampuan terlibat dalam hubungan sosial, kedekatan sosial, regulasi emosi, menghindar dari lingkungan sosial dan kemandirian. Namun, ada juga faktor-faktor dalam adaptasi sosial yang dialami oleh mahasiswa Afirmasi Papua yaitu, dukungan orangtua dan hambatan akademik. KESIMPULAN Adaptasi sosial mahasiswa afirmasi Papua merupakan proses yang penuh tantangan namun juga menunjukkan potensi ketahanan mereka selama merantau. BACKGROUND Affirmation students from Papua who participate in the Higher Education Affirmation Program (ADik) face social adaptation challenges when pursuing education outside their home regions. Cultural differences, language barriers, and discrimination experiences are some of the difficulties they encounter. PURPOSE This study aims to explore and describe the social adaptation experiences of affirmation students from Papua studying at the University of Jambi. METHOD The study employed a qualitative approach using a phenomenological method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation, then analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). RESULTS Participants experienced a variety of social adaptation challenges, including discrimination, efforts to respect local culture, the ability to engage in social interactions, emotional regulation, social closeness, social withdrawal, and independence. In addition, certain influencing factors were identified, such as parental support and academic obstacles. CONCLUSION The social adaptation process of affirmation students from Papua is complex and filled with challenges, yet it also reveals their resilience and efforts to adjust while living away from home. Their experiences underline the importance of creating a culturally inclusive and supportive academic environment. Keywords: social adaptation, affirmation students, Papua, University of Jambi
