Abstract
This research aimed to analyze hyperbolic and ironic expressions in Jenny Han’s novel The Summer I Turned Pretty and to explain their contextual meanings using a semantic approach. This research focused only on hyperbole and irony. The method used in collecting the data related to the subject of this research is the documentation method. This research was conducted by collecting data taken from monologue narratives and dialogues between characters in the novel. The data collection used the following steps: finding sentences that use hyperbolic or ironic expressions. Each expression was identified and classified according to Knickerbocker and Reninger’s (1974) typology of figurative language. The contextual meaning of each figurative expression was interpreted based on Lyons’s theory. The result shows that there are total of 35 figurative expressions, including 32 hyperboles and three expressions of irony. Hyperbolic expressions appeared in a variety of emotional contexts such as boredom, impatience, nostalgia, romantic excitement, and anger. They were primarily used to dramatize characters’ internal experiences and subjective realities, especially in moments of emotional intensity typical of adolescence. In contrast, ironic expressions played a significant role in highlighting emotional contradictions, relational distance, and unspoken tensions. They were particularly in romantic or socially awkward situations. Interpreted through the lens of contextual semantics, both hyperbole and irony gained richer meaning when considered within the situational and relational context of the narrative. The findings demonstrate that these devices are not merely decorative elements but function as expressive tools that reveal the emotional depth and interpersonal dynamics of the characters, making them essential to the novel’s storytelling.
