ABSTRACT Sari, Tiara Indah. 2019. Grammatical Cohesion Found in the Third Semester Students’ Argumentative Essay of English Department. The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University.First Supervisor is Yulhenli Thabran. S.S., M.A. Second supervisor is Drs. Ahmad Ridha, M, A. Keywords: Grammatical cohesion, and argumentative essays. The importance of studying cohesion, especially cohesive devices is to create a good and systematic text, and to make us easily understand what information is delivered in it. On this study, the researcher would like to find various types of grammatical cohesion and common grammatcal cohesion used on argumentative essay by the third semester students’ at English department of Jambi University.The research problem of this study is formulated as follows: 1)What types of grammatical cohesion are used in the third students’ argumentative essay?, 2)What are the common grammatical cohesion features used in students’ argumentative essay?. Purpose of this study are to find the various types and common grammatical cohesionused by the third semester students’ in their argumentative essay.The data for this research were collected through documentation and they were analyzed descriptively.There were five types of cohesive devices which proposed by Halliday and Hassan (1976) and five types of them were analyzed and used by English study program students in writing. They were reference, conjunction, substitution, and ellipsis. The result indicated that the students used the various types of grammatical cohesion like personal reference, demonstrative, comparative, additive, adversative,causal and temporal but none of them used substitution and ellipsis. The most common grammatical used are in reference 50,90% and conjunctions 49,09%. And for the specific features of reference and conjunction are; personal reference 18,51%, demonstrative 8,19%, comparative 8,43%, additive 30,18%, adversative 7,88%,causal 8,98%, and temporal 2,12%. Meanwhile, substitution and ellipsis make up 0% in the text.the findings of the research provide information for teacher, students, and researcher to be more aware aboutthe importance of cohesive devices so it could be more applied in writing skill.
