Abstract
Question and answer are the most common ways of interaction in classroom activities. By asking questions lecturer can build good communications with the students, review the materials, assess the students abilities and assist them to comprehend the lesson. Since question frequently produced by the lecturer and have significant role in learning. I am interested to do a research in that field. The research is conducted to examine the types of questions used in English lesson especially conducted at Jambi University. This is a descriptive qualitative research; the data were collected by recording the teaching and learning process and interviewing the English lecturer. The transcript of the teaching and learning process and the interview were made. Each type of questions used by the lecturer in teaching the students as well as students’ oral responses were analyzed, while the interview result was used as additional information for this study. The data were obtained from classroom observation for six learning sessions and two interview session. The data collected from classroom observation were transcribed and then analyzed by using the theory of Anderson and Krathwohl (2001). There are two English lecturer as the participants. The findings reveal that the lecturer posed 3 types of questions to the students during classroom interaction. Those three types of questions were knowledge questions, understanding question and analysis questions. Furthermore, knowledge questions were highly employed by the English teacher and used to elicit factual answers, recall tests, recognize information, and check students’ understanding. It was concluded that there were several factors that might influence the use of certain types of question: the objectives of lesson, the variety of tasks, and the teacher’s purposes in asking questions.
