Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the storage length of frozen semen on ice on the motility of swamp buffalo spermatozoa. The design of the experiment was Completely Randomized Design with 5 treatments and 5 replications. The treatments were frozen semen thawed directly without liquid nitrogen (P0), frozen semen stored on ice for 15 min prior to thawing (P1), 30 min prior to thawing (P2), 45 min prior to thawing (P3), and 60 min prior to thawing (P4). Parameters measured were the sperm motility and the recovery rate of sperm. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance. The results showed that frozen semen storage on ice affected the motility and the recovery rate of swamp buffalo spermatozoa (P<0.05). The motility and recovery rate of P0 was the highest (P<0.05) among P1, P2, P3, and P4. The motility of P0, P1, and P2 were 40% above. In conclusion, the swamp buffalo frozen semen storage on ice reduced spermatozoa motility, and it could be storage on ice for 30 min before thawing
