Abstract

Opandi, Edo Febri (2019). Students’ Self-Confidence on Fifth Semester Student of Jambi University When Speaking in Classroom. English Education Study Program, Language and Art Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University. The first supervisor is Dr. Drs. Yon Adlis, M.Pd. The second supervisor is Rd. M. Ali, S.Pd., M.Pd. The purpose of this study are to find out how self confidence affect students’ speaking performance in classroom, the factors that make self-confidence influence students’ performance when speaking in classroom, and students’ way to build up their self-confidence when speaking in classroom. This study use Qualitative research to present the result of the study. Two kinds of data collection techniques are used in this research; those are demographic background information and interview. Demographic background information, used to collect participants’ background information. The second instrument is interview. There are 9 participants in this study, which classify into three score grade and three participants for each grade (Low, Average, High). Based on the result of the interview the researcher found that all of participant has a problem with self-confidence. Especially for students with low score who said that self-confidence are very influential for their speaking skill. The factors that make self-confidence influence students speaking skill are topic, preparation, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and motivation. They have their own strategy to build up their self-confidence; there are training and practice, looking neat, using body language and using funny word when they speaking. Students need to talk with peers about that problem and also use their own strategy to develop their self-confidence. Keyword : Self-confidence, Speaking
