Abstract

This study aims to find out how to apply the Active Debate model on social studies learning in improving the speaking skills of students in grade V of elementary school. This research was conducted at SDIT Ahmad Dahlan, Jambi City in January 2019. This type of research is classroom action research, which consists of two cycles in which there are 2 meetings in each cycle. The procedure in this study begins with planning, action, observation and reflection. From the results of the data that have been obtained the percentage of performance measures shows that the results of pre-cycle student performance measures amounted to 31.66% and experienced an increase in cycle I. The results of student performance measures in the first cycle were 52.91%. At the 1st meeting the results of student performance were 45.83% and increased at meeting 2, which was 60%. The results of student performance in the second cycle were 77.91%. At the 1st meeting, it was 62.77% and the student's performance improved at meeting 2, which was 85.83%. The results of research obtained from observational data that have been made show that the pre-action results of observations regarding students' speaking skills were 40.85% and experienced an increase in cycle I. The results of observations regarding the amount of speaking skills in the first cycle were 48.32%. At the 1st meeting the results of observations regarding speaking skills of speaking skills were 76.11% and experienced an increase in meeting 2 which was 86.10%. The results of observations regarding speaking skills in the second cycle were 74.43%. At meeting 1 The results of observations regarding speaking skills of speaking skills were 62.77% and experienced an increase in meeting 2 which was 86.10%. From the results obtained it can be concluded that the Active Debate model can improve the speaking skills of students in social studies learning in the fifth grade of elementary school.From the results of this study, it is suggested that using the Active Debate model the teacher can first pay attention to the characteristics of students and plan everything appropriately and can apply the Active Debate model by carrying out the steps of learning effectively.
