Abstract

The Use of Oral Presentation by the Fourth Semester Students of English Education Study Program at University of Jambi; Do They Receive the Benefit?.English Education Study Program.Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in Academic Year 2019/2020. The first supervisor is Dr.Rosinta Norawati, M.A. The second supervisor is Duti Voyla, S.Pd., M.Pd. At English Education Study Program at University of Jambi, oral presentation is one of the assessment that is common to use. This research investigated how much benefit the fourth semester student of English Education Study Program at University of Jambi receives from oral presentation as an assignsment. Twelve (12) participants were chose based on demographic questionnaire that researcher gave to every classes in the fourth semester of English Education Study Program at University of Jambi. There were two major themes emerged from data analysis, the first theme is there are two benefits that students gained from oral presentation, increased speaking skill and fruitful discussion. Every participants agree that oral presentation helps them to increase their speaking skill because they have to speak in oral presentation. Discussion in oral presentation hated or loved by the students provide them with benefit such as new knowledge and a place to exchange their opinion. There were two problems that decreases benefits of oral presentation, the first problem is many students felt forced to conduct oral presentation because it is an assignment from their lecturer, and the second problem is in group oral presentation there are many students who only care about their own material. To conclude, oral presentation as an assessment can be beneficial for students; if lecturer able to minimize problems that decreases benefits of oral presentation. Instead using oral presentation as a tool to assess their students’ knowledge, teacher or lecturer could use it as tool to help their students to learn, because not only it decrease the problems that oral presentation have as an assessment, it also benefit the students.
