Abstract

ABSTRACT Firda, J. 2019. Developing Task-Based Supplementary Reading Material For Eighth Graders of MTs N 4 Kerinci. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Jambi in Academic Year 2019/2020. First Sepervisor: Dr. Fortunasari, S.S., M.A. and Second Supervisor: Dr. Drs. .Makmur, M.A., M.Hum. Keywords: Islamic context, Task-Based, Supplementary Materials, Reading, Research and Development This study is aimed at describe the process of developing task-based supplementary reading materials for eighth graders of MTs N 4 Kerinci. There are three stages conducted in this research. First is analyze: 1) Material analysis, 2) Students’ needs. Second is Design and Development: learning objective and material, and the third is validation from the media and material expert. The subjects of this research were eighth graders students of MTsN 4 Kerinci Class VIII A. It consists of 15 students. Interview was applied to obtain the data of the needs analysis, and questionnaires for the expert judgement. The data were analysed qualitatively. The result of the research showed that: 1) The students need of supplementary materials are the materials which are related to their real life that contain structure and function of the texts, vocabulary and grammar lesson and interesting reading activities which allow them to interact with the teacher and other students, 2) the product was a set of task-based supplementary English reading materials focusing on recount and descriptive texts for Grdae VIII students of Islamic Junior High School entitled ‘Reading Practice’. It consisted of two units, 3) the developing materials is validated by media expert categorized as good and can be try out to the eighth grade students of Islamic Junior High School (MTs). Based on the finding of this research, it can be concluded that Task-Based English reading material are appropriate for eighth graders of Islamic Junior High School. The researcher hopes to the further researcher can implement this English supplementary material in order to examine and make it become the final product of English supplementary reading materials.
