Abstract

Writing is one of the tools to communicate verbally. It is one of the language skills that people have and use to express their ideas, opinion through written communication. However, writing is not an easy skill because students need to consider some processes in order to produce a good writing. In this research, the researcher aimed describing at students‟ ability in writing especially in recount text. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative and the instruments used was a writing task. The sample used in this research was cluster sampling and the participant of this research consisted offifty-one students of grade eight from VIII A and VIII B of SMP N 13 Kerinci. The researcher analysed the data by using rubric score to measure the students ability in writing recount text. Based on the data, the researcher found there were no students that received excellent score. There were 17 students (33,33%) that received good score, 11 students (21,56%) received average score, 14 students (27,45%) that received poor score, and 9 students (17,64%) that received extremely poor score. From the result, it can be concluded the level of students ability and writing recount text was average. The researcher suggests that the students at SMP N 13 Kerinci improve their English skill especially in grammar. The students need to develop their writing skill and the students have to study all aspects recount text.
