Abstract

This research aimed to analyze how women are represented in the English translation of the novel Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, translated by Jamie Chang. A descriptive qualitative approach was applied in the research. The analysis in this research was limited to the Text (Description) stage within Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Framework. It focused on using Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework to examine linguistic elements, particularly lexical classification and transitivity. The focus was on examining how the selected female characters—Oh Misook, Kim Eunyoung, Seungyeon, A Female Student, Kim Eunsil, and Kim Jiyoung are represented. Through these characters, Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 presents a layered view of how women are represented and treated across different societal roles. The analysis identified themes such as Traditional Motherhood, Patriarchal Expectations, Gendered Restrictions, Institutional Barriers, Career Sacrifices and Benevolent Sexism, each illustrating different dimensions of the social constraints placed on women. These themes illustrate the layered social constraints placed on women and highlight the novel’s critique of gender dynamics in society. The findings contribute academically by enriching the understanding of gender representation in literature, particularly in translated works, and practically by encouraging educators, policymakers, and general readers to critically engage with societal narratives and advocate for more equitable gender representations in both literature and real-world contexts.
