Abstract
ABSTRACT Purnamasari, Desi. (2019). Investigating Students’ Personal Initiative and their Overall English Speaking Achievement. A Thesis, Language and Arts Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in Academic Year 2018/2019. The first Supervisor is Hadiyanto, S. Pd., M. Ed., Ph. D. and the second Supervisor is Dr. Reli Handayani, S. S., M. Pd. This research is intended to know whether there is a correlation or not between students’ personal initiative towards their English speaking performance. The research method was quantitative correlation research. The samples of this research were 92 English education study program students’ in the second semester for academic year 2018/2019 at Jambi University. The instrument to collect the data was questionnaire consist of 25 questions. And to collect their English speaking achievement data the score of speaking subject was used. In analyzing the data, the questionnaires were counted by Likert’s scale rating. To find the coefficient correlation of the variables the researcher used Pearson Correlation Coefficient in SPSS type 16.0. The results of this research show that there is a significant correlation between students’ personal initiative (X) and their English speaking achievement (Y) with the value 0.496 which was categorized as a moderate level. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that personal initiative of the students was important to be considered as one of determination factors of students’ achievement in English speaking. At the end of this research, the researcher suggests that in giving speaking scores to not only look at the speaking component (grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation) but also to see how their personal initiative is. It helps students become more confident in improving their ability to speak English. Keywords: Personal Initiative, Speaking Achievements, Correlation
