Abstract

ABSTRACT Annisa, Aprilia. 2021. Exploring Children’s Interests for Effective English Teaching and Learning: A Case Study in A Non-Governmental Primary School. Thesis. Magister of English Education Program, University of Jambi in Academic Year 2020/2021. The first supervisor is Drs. Syahrial, M.Ed., Ph.D. The second supervisor is Urip Sulistiyo, M.Ed., Ph.D. Keywords: Interest, Effective Learning, Young Learner This thesis was held to explore what themes interest children in learning English as a foreign language. It was designed as qualitative study with the case study approach. Observation and unstructured interview were used to collect the data and information. There were 16 participants of the research. They are the children in Grade 5 in English Hour Program who come from the homogenous ethnics, belong to parents of middle-class families, and are categorised as children in Generation Alpha who have different interests in the different topics of learning. The researcher observed the classroom through video recording which was recorded during the lesson. After collected the data from interviewing the participants by using audio recorder, the researcher made transcripts of the participants’ interviews. The research findings highlighted the following themes. Themes related to the students’ interest in learning English. There were eight themes found by researcher in this research. Those are divided into two main themes. From the interest of children in the topics in learning English, the findings were: the topics related to their family, the topics related to their life, and the topics related to their future. Then from the interest of children in the activities in learning English, the findings were: the activities related to sport, the activities related to reading, the activities related to drawing, the activities related to watching YouTube, and the activities related to playing.
