Abstract

This study presented to investigating EFL learners speaking problems that found in eleventh grade students at SMK N 4 Batanghari. In this research, a survey research design was used in collecting and analyzing the data. It means the data was collected and analyzed quantitatively. This research sample is all the eleventh-grade students: XI Pemasaran 1, XI Pemasaran 2, XI Multimedia 1, XI Multimedia 2, and XI Akuntansi 1. In this research, the researcher collected the data using the quantitative data collection method. The quantitative data collection was collected through survey questionnaires that distributed by using google form. Then, the data from the participants were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The result showed that student IX grade students at SMK N 4 Batanghari have difficulty in speaking skills. There are several problems that make them struggle to speak English. First, the students do not have sufficient vocabulary (lack of vocabulary) to speak English. Second, the students admitted that they do not know how to pronounce a word in English well. Third, the student also lacked of grammatical understanding of grammar that hinders them from speaking English. Another issue that impaired the students to speak English is psychological factors. The result showed that most students want to speak English like a native speaker, but they are too afraid. The student admitted that they were afraid if they made a mistake in speaking people will laugh at them. Moreover, another problem that makes students difficult to speak English in the classroom is the feeling of shyness. The student admitted that they do not want to make a mistake while speaking English with their friends.
