Abstract
ABSTRACT Neny Novridewi. 2023. Improving Students Reading Ability Using Reciprocal Teaching At A State Islamic Senior High School In Jambi, AThesis: Master Of English Education Study Program. Jambi University. The First Supervisor is Dr. Sri Wachyunni, S.S., M.Hum., MA., The Second Supervisor is Prof. Urip Sulistiyo, S.Pd., M.Ed., Ph.D. The research aims to (1) identify whether and to what extent reciprocal teaching can improve students’ reading ability and (2) describe the situation when reciprocal teaching is implemented in reading class. This research was conducted in one of the State Islamic Senior High Schools in Jambi; the research subjects were the eleventh grade of IPA-1 in the academic year 2022/2023. This study was undertaken from September – December 2022 through Classroom Action Research. It consisted of two cycles. Each cycle had four and three meetings. There are two types of data in this research, namely qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained by conducting direct observation in the classroom and interviewing some students related to their activities in learning, holding regular meetings with the collaborator to find out students’ improvement. The questionnaire, photograph, and field notes were also used in the research. Quantitative data were the students’ scores obtained from pre-test and post-test. In analyzing quantitative data used, descriptive statistics. In analyzing qualitative data using the constant comparative method. It involved; (1) comparing incidents applicable to each category; (2) integrating categories and their properties; (3) delimiting theory; (4) writing the theory. The result of the study showed that: 1) Reciprocal Teaching improves students’ reading ability in terms of student’s activities in the learning reading process and students’ reading scores. The improvement of students’ reading ability can be seen in the pretest's mean is 55,00; the post-test in the first cycle is 65, and the mean of the post-test in the second cycle is 82. 2) Reciprocal Teaching technique, implemented in reading class, can also improve students’ interaction, confidence, and motivation in classroom activities. They become more active, enthusiastic, and braver in expressing their ideas or opinions using English. Based on the result of the study, teaching reading using Reciprocal Teaching is a suitable technique to improve students’ reading ability. The study can be used as a reference for the teacher in improving the teaching quality by conducting the technique toward improving the students’ reading ability.
