Abstract

This research aimed to explore lecturers’ reinforcement in teaching English during the first-semester in the English Education Department at Sulthan Thaha Islamic State University. The research employed a qualitative research design, specifically a case study. The data collection technique was utilized by the interviews. The participants in this research consist of five lecturers, each with over eight years of experience teaching in the English Education Department. The collected data were analyzed using three significant stages of analysis: data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The research revealed that the lecturers used two kinds of the reinforcement to teach in the English Language Teaching (ELT) classroom. The results indicated that the lecturers employed both verbal and non-verbal reinforcement. Reinforcement was provided by five lecturers in four ways: individually, in groups, immediacy and by combining two kinds of verbal and non-verbal reinforcement during ELT classes. Then, the researcher discovered that all lecturers consistently sought to provide reinforcement when students feel insecure because they feel lack vocabulary in speaking English.
